G1 Drivers Licence

The G1 drivers licence is your first step in the process of becoming a fully licensed driver in Ontario. Here is what you need to know about the G1 license:

• You must be at least 16 years of age
• You must have a G1 driver's licence to go to driving school
• To get your G1, you must pass a written examination. The test covers the core topics of driving such as road rules & regulations, street signs, and driving techniques.
• To study for your exam pick up a drivers handbook at CADD, a Drive Test office or other locations in the community.
• To write the exam you must pass an eye exam, have 2 pieces of identification and pay the $145 fee.
• To pass the exam, you must correctly answer 16/20 questions on both portions of the multiple choice test
• When you pass the writing driving test, you will be eligible to take the G2 in one year. You can take the G2 test within 8 months if you successfully complete driver education from an MTO approved driving school.

Driving Limitations with a G1 Driver's Licence

A number of conditions and limitation apply to drivers who possess a G1 driver's licence:

• You must be accompanied by an experienced driver who has at least 4 years' experience as a G level licensed driver
• You are only permitted to drive on 400 series highways when accompanies by a licensed driving instructor
• You must have a 0% blood alcohol level at all times
• G1 drivers are prohibited from driving between the hours of 12am to 5am
• The number of passengers in the vehicle must not exceed the number of seat belts in the vehicle

G2 Licence

The G2 driver's licence is the second step in the process of becoming a fully licensed driver in Ontario: Here is what you need to know about the G2 driver's licence:

• It is recommended that you attend driving school to successfully prepare for your G1 exit test.
• Book your road test well in advance at a Drive Test location in your area
• The test takes approximately 20 minutes to complete
• If you attend Canadian Academy of Defensive Driving and complete the driver training course, you are eligible to reduce the waiting period for your first road test from 12 months to 8 months.

Driving Limitations with a G2 Drivers Licence

• You must maintain a blood alcohol level of 0% at all times when driving
• The number of passengers in the vehicle must not exceed the number of seat belts in the vehicle

G2 Exit Test and G Licence

The G Licence is the final step in the graduated licencing system in Ontario. Here is what you need to know about the G licence:

• You can book your G2 exit road test one year after you get your G2 drivers licence
• Book your road test well in advance at a Drive Test location in your area
• You must pay $85 road test fee
• The road test will take approximately 40 minutes to complete, including highway driving
• Once you have passed the G2 exit road test, you are now a fully licenced (G) driver
